Medical professionals who specialize in this branch of medicine are called hematologists.

The main areas of hematology
Four main areas of hematology:

Hemoglobinopathy – this field covers the diagnosis and treatment of all inherited or genetic abnormalities of hemoglobin molecules. Sickle cell anemia and thalassemia are examples of hemoglobinopathy.

Hematological malignancies include the diagnosis and treatment of cancers of the leukemia, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. Examples of hematological malignancies are myeloma, lymphoma and leukemia.

Anemia – a condition when there is a lack of hemoglobin or healthy red blood cells. Hemoglobin is a large part of the red blood cells that carry oxygen in the body. Therefore, the body will not have enough oxygen if it has little or abnormal amount of hemoglobin or red blood cells.

Coagulopathy – This is a bleeding disorder in which the ability of the blood to clot or form clots within the expected time is impaired or damaged. This blood disorder can cause excessive or extensive bleeding after an injury, dental procedures, or other medical procedures.

Then, there is hypercoagulation, an inherited or acquired blood clotting disorder that increases the tendency of blood to form clots. This condition increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis and blood clots.
